In der ersten Ausgabe waren die Klavierbegleitung zu Übungszwecken enthalten. 1938 wurden dann 230 Kopien der Variation 1 speziell für die Cambridge University Music Society produziert. [OUP file 251] 1955 wurde das Werk für eine Aufführung der Purcell Singers überarbeitet; die optionale Orgelstimme (bearbeitet von Ralph Downes) wurde 1957-58 hinzugefügt und ersetzte in der Partitur die Klavierstimme. 1958 wurde es dann vollständig überarbeitet.

A Boy was Born is one of the most excitingly satisfying of Britten’s choral works.
While it should not be undertaken by any but the most ambitious amateur choirs, its challenges are certainly surmountable with a good run of rehearsals.
