Stille Nacht - German Christmas Carols for Organ
|
Of all of the traditional music for Christmas, none has endured and flourished like the German carol. Dating back to medieval times, these early, simple, child-like melodies were of a folk origin, joyfully sung by farmers and shepherds, and usually with lyrics written by local clergymen. They were sung often as choral dialogues or performed in religious Christmas plays, although it wasn’t until the 19th century that many of the festive pieces known today arose. Mr. Martin’s generous and delightful organ collection of mostly familiar carols captures that “Weihnachten” spirit: so distinctive, so natural, and so unique to the Christmas celebration.
