Die 6. Sinfonie zählt zu Bruckners eigenwilligsten Schöpfungen. Die Poesie und Kraft der thematischen Einfälle, der Erfindungsreichtum und die seelische Weite, das kompositorische Spektrum, welches von den feinsten Nuancen bis zu den komplexesten polyphonen musikalisch-architektonischen Konstruktionen reicht, die rhythmische Vielfalt und an alte Musik gemahnende Polymetrik – etwa im ersten Satz die Spannung zwischen Zweier- und Dreierproportion – sind in der Musikgeschichte einmalig.
The sixth Symphony is one of Bruckner’s most unconventional creations. The poetry and the power of the thematic ideas, the inventiveness and the spiritual breadth, the compositional spectrum ranging from the finest nuances to the most complex polyphonic architectural structures, the variety of rhythm and a polymetry reminiscent of early music – for example, in the tension between two-beat and three-beat proportions in the first movement – are unique in the history of music.
