As some years ago the trumpeter Jan Fredrik Christiansen asked me if I would compose something for trumpet and organ, it was immediately clear to me that this would not be a festive piece, but rather something contemplative and mainly melancholic. Therefore: Lamento – song of grief.
Concerning the performance: The beginning should be played very freely. When the organ sets in, an atmosphere should develop as at the beginning of the Prelude to the third Act of Richard Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde. The organ sixteenths at the bottom of the second page as mist; at letter C the trumpet should enter as a ray of light. Here it is important that the two instruments do not play synchronously, rather like an improvisation. At letter F the rhythm should be very clear and stable. The quasi waltz at letter G should be played with a moment of humour. At letter K: almost impatient. In the last bar, d major should remain in the ears.
It is possible to perform the piece with a clarinet (in B flat) as solo instrument.
I thank Jan Fredrik Christiansen and Terje Winge warmly for their dedication to the piece. Warm thanks also to Thomas Ehn who produced the first printed version of the piece. His version is the basis for this edition.
