The First Walpurgis Night
Im Sommer 1799 schrieb Goethe seine Ballade „Die erste Walpurgisnacht“ und bat seinen Freund Carl Friedrich Zelter um die Vertonung des Werkes. Zelter sah sich dazu jedoch außerstande, und so wurde Goethes Wunsch erst 30 Jahre später von Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy umgesetzt. Mendelssohn hatten die „himmlischen Worte“ der heidnischen Ballade nach einem Besuch in Weimar geradezu zur Vertonung gedrängt. 1832 nahm die Komposition Gestalt an und wurde ein Jahr später in der Berliner Sing-Akademie uraufgeführt.
Mit der ersten Fassung des Werkes war Mendelssohn jedoch unzufrieden und hielt sie zurück, bis er sich zehn Jahre nach der Uraufführung zu einer tiefgreifenden Überarbeitung entschloss.
In dieser Form, in der das Werk bis heute gespielt wird, erlebte „Die erste Walpurgisnacht“ 1843 in Leipzig ihre Uraufführung im Beisein von Robert Schumann und Hector Berlioz.
Mit der Ausgabe von John Michael Cooper wird erstmalig eine Urtextausgabe des Werkes vorgelegt. Die Edition erfolgte auf dem neuesten Stand der Forschung, ein Kritischer Bericht rundet den Band ab.
